Reports that 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin is abandoning his role in the upcoming film adaptation of Rock of Ages are false, according to Deadline.com. Baldwin reportedly showed up in Miami for a recent run-through of the hair metal movie musical and will indeed play Dennis Dupree, the owner of The Bourbon Room, who duets with right-hand man Lonny (Russell Brand) on the REO Speedwagon hit “I Can’t Fight This Feeling.”
In addition to Baldwin and Brand, the previously reported all-star cast boasts a slew of film and television personalities. Tom Cruise stars as rock star Stacee Jaxx, Bryan Cranston and Catherine Zeta-Jones as the Mayor of Los Angeles and his ultra-conservative wife, Brand as Lonny, Julianne Hough as Kansas-transplant Sherrie, Mary J. Blige as strip club owner Justice, Paul Giamatti as the manager of Stacee’s band and newcomer Diego Gonzalez Boneta as leading man Drew.
Rock of Ages is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, where small town girl Sherrie meets a big city rocker at the Bourbon Room, L.A.’s most famous rock club. Their love story is told through the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and many more. The Broadway musical, which is now running at the Helen Hayes Theatre, received five Tony nominations (including Best Musical) after opening on April 7, 2009.
The film features a script by librettist Chris D’Arienzo, and has reportedly gotten a rewrite from Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt. The movie is scheduled to start shooting May 23 and is expected to hit theaters on June 1, 2012.
